Product Details

For century's Peat was used as a fuel across Scotland, Ireland and wales as well as European and Baltic country's where wood was scarce. Peat was dug on the moors from the roots of the growing heather and dried. Often stacked against, or inside Black houses for winter.

It is the burning of peat which gives Black houses their name- the smoke blackened the inside of the house. It burns slowly with a meagre flame producing little heat and copious smoke.

Indicative of poverty and a lost rural way of scratching a living from the land.
