We tend to use up to four layers together on the bottom row to give the impression of thickness and then stagger at 40 cm layers up the roof.
For weather proofing and lifespan your roof pitch should be at least 30 degrees pitch.
Heather thatch is very flamable and you should consider fire retardency for all applications.
Apply in layers from the bottom of the roof in 40 cm (16") steps up.
